Getting to Stavanger

Stavanger is a major city on the southwest coast of Norway. The Stavanger Sola airport (airport code SVG) has multiple daily connections to the major international hubs of Amsterdam (KLM, member of SkyTeam), Copenhagen (SAS, member of Star Alliance), and Oslo (SAS and Norwegian). From the airport, there is an airport bus (Flybuss) to downtown. You can take a taxi from the airport, but these are expensive so the bus is recommended.

There is a train connection to Stavanger from Oslo, but be aware that the journey takes approximately 8 hours.

Conference venue

The conference will take place on the campus of the University of Stavanger in Hulda Garborg hus. The campus is approximately 5km from downtown.

Local buses #6 (every 15 min) and #7 (every 30 min) run from downtown to campus. The cheapest way to travel is to install the mobile app for the bus company Kolumbus and buy tickets through it. It is possible to pay with cash, but tickets are 20 kr more than in the app.

Accommodation

Because the conference takes place on the university campus instead of at a hotel, there is no conference hotel. There are many accommodation choices in the downtown area. Some hotels in downtown convenient to the bus routes to campus are: Scandic Stavanger Park, Radisson Blue Atlantic Hotel Stavanger, Comfort Hotel Square, Thon Hotel Maritime, and Clarion Hotel Skagen Brygge. All the major hotels in Norway include expansive breakfast buffets in the accommodation price.

CURRENCY

The currency in Norway is Norwegian kroner, which is abbreviated NOK or kr. All stores and restaurants accept Visa/Mastercard. Many places do not accept cash at all.

 Conference schedule

The regular conference sessions take place from Thursday, August 4th, to Saturday, August 6th on the UiS campus. As well as sessions, Friday will include a guided tour of the Iron Age Farm operated by the UiS Archaeology Museum. Lunch will be provided for conference participants on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Saturday evening will feature a boat tour to the world-renowned garden of Flor og Fjære, located on a small island, where we will have the conference dinner after a guided tour of the gardens.

Two optional day-long tours will be available for purchase:

Tour #1. Wednesday, August 3rd. This tour takes you to islands north of the city to visit Norway’s best preserved medieval monastery Utstein Monastery which dates from the eleventh century and then get a guided tour of a local tomato producer. The region is known for its agricultural productivity, including industrial greenhouses that produce most of the cucumbers and tomatoes consumed in Norway.

Tour #2. Sunday, August 7th. This tour will take you under the fjord through the world’s longest undersea car tunnel for a guided tour of the historic farm of Viga with its rich history going back to the 1500s. On the way back we will stop at the ecological cider producer Grønvik Gard and the cheesemaker Ryfylke gardsysteri.

Lunches will be included in both tours.
