CFP: Rural films – Filme in der ländlichen Gesellschaft

The Rural History Yearbook writes:

“The thematic scope of the Rural History Yearbook/Jahrbuch für Geschichte des ländlichen Raumes 2024 (https://journals.univie.ac.at/index.php/rhy) is “Rural films”.

We are looking for contributions on the search, indexing, collecting and archiving of film material. In addition to collection and archiving projects, we also focus on questions of cataloguing, describing, and communicating filmic sources. The second part is dedicated to films as a source of historiography. What is the special value of historical film material for analysing and describing the development of the agricultural sector, rural societies, economy, infrastructure, and social formations in the countryside since the late 19th century? Finally, in the third part, questions of using filmic material to communicate historical knowledge and narratives are addressed. What can be communicated and shown in the form of video essays (see also: “Video Essays in Rural History” https://ruralfilms.eu/video-essays/) that is not possible in written texts or oral presentations? This part is open for audio-visual formats as well.

To discuss possible contributions for the planned publication, the Archives of Rural History (ARH) and the Institute of Rural History (IGLR), in collaboration with the European Rural History Film Association (ERHFA, https://ruralfilms.eu), are organising a workshop in Bern on November 16/17, 2022.

Proposals for contributions (in German or English, max. 3’000 characters) can be sent to the editors of the volume and organisers of the workshop (peter.moser@agrararchiv.ch; brigitte.semanek@ruralhistory.at and andreas.wigger@agrararchiv.ch) by October 20, 2022.”
